Personally I have been a little late to the Below Deck fan club. As ex crew, at first I was frustrated by what I saw as sensational TV dumbing down the very high standards upheld by most yacht crew. However, having thrown my concerns aside I am now almost finished season 2 of Below Deck Sailing Yacht and am fully invested in these crew members. From my anxiety over whether Jean-Luc had some innocent chafing or if there was something more serious going on with his todger, to the pertinent question of are poached eggs always served with hollandaise sauce (team Daisy here). The real question we all want to know though is….. What does it cost to charter a Below Deck Yacht? Since 2013 when Below Deck first sailed onto our TV screens, courtesy of reality TV stalwart Bravo, we have seen 16 different yachts taking the star role. With charter rates starting from lowest €140,000 to highest €325,000, these yachts are the real deal. In reality a yacht charter costs more than the figure advertised. There are 5 main costs to consider:
Charter rates are also often split into low and high rates. In the Mediterranean, in summer the low rate months are May, June, September and October, with high rate months being July and August. In the Caribbean, in winter the high rate times are Christmas and New Year, with the rest of the season falling under low rates. Usually you will see charter rates advertised in Euro for charters in Europe and US$ for charters in Caribbean and USA. BELOW DECK ORIGINAL SERIESSeason 1 - MY HONOUR - From €155,000 per week

In October 2022, after an incredibly busy charter season and attending Monaco Yacht Show, I headed off to Split, Croatia to join the stunning 48m motor sailor CORSARIO. Built in Croatia in 2019, she sleeps 12 guests in 6 cabins and offers the additional features of a deck jacuzzi and sauna, which was perfect for a late summer charter where the days are hot but the evenings can be slightly chillier. The best feature of CORSARIO though is undoubtably the crew. Lead by Captain Juri this is a team that are like a family with each other, and they bring you into their family and show you their country with a joy and care that makes you feel instantly happy, relaxed and removed from every day life. Day 3 - Solta and The Blue Cave

It's been a long while since I have written anything in this blog, and the reason is that life became so crazy it just completely fell by the way side. In December 2020, the world was oscillating between local lockdowns and resurgences of covid, and trying to return to normal. Although a lot of the world had opened up, travel was complicated and having only been in the brokerage business for 5 months before the pandemic hit, I was still building my client book and business was slow. From both a personal and financial stand point this was not ideal for me, I really don't like to be idle! Reaching into my Superyacht network I was put in touch with Waterproof Consulting, a niche company that handles new builds and refits for Family Offices. It meant moving to Barcelona but it sounded like just the challenge I needed, and the move was made with the blessing of Northrop & Johnson meaning I was not giving up brokerage, just adding extra work into my life. Car packed to the hilt with belongings and animals I took the ferry across and joined the office in Marina Port Vell, Barcelona.
It was an honour and a privledge to be a part of these inspirational projects, but as we came into 2022 the world was back to normal and I could not cope with the pressure of my work with these projects and charter brokerage. Last year, 2022, was a phenomenal year for yacht charter with far more demand then supply. It was time to head back to Mallorca and give all my time back to Charter Brokerage.
Every cloud has a silver lining and I can definitely say this opportunity was my Covid Pandemic silver lining. The experience and skills learnt stay with me and that will not be the last new build project I am a part of, that I am sure. 11/8/2020 0 Comments With Trump set to exit the Presidency, what does this mean for the UHNWI in America and the Superyacht industry?
Whatever the truth behind the allegations, and regardless of your moral opinion of Donald Trump, the fact remains that Trump´s policies were highly productive to the wealth of UHNWIs in America, and we clearly saw this translated into a healthy new build order book of Superyachts and a strong yacht charter market. American clients make up a very significant proportion of yacht owners and yacht charter clients, so what happens to the American markets significantly affects the Superyacht industry. How did Trump help the wealthy?
Hedge fund managers, private equity executives and venture capitalists benefit from the carried interest tax loophole and many other features worked together to give the very wealthy a four year boom in financial strength. What can we expect from a Biden government?Over the course of the election campaign, Joe Biden has been vocal that he commits to strong tax reforms if he gets into power, planning to make the tax system fairer by increasing taxes on the rich and corporations. This would include repealing most of the tax breaks from the 2017 TCJA, closing tax loopholes to the wealthy, and reforming taxation of capital gains e.g. for those making more than US$1 million, raising the top tax rate on gains from the sale of investments from 20% to 39.6% to match the top rate on wages and salaries. This of course would affect a significant proportion of our clients in the Superyacht industry, and I am already seeing this directly translating into potential business. A Superyacht law firm based in Florida recently commented that they have 2 clients sitting on new build contracts. Both clients have said that if Trump is re-elected it was all systems go, if Biden won then it would be on hold whilst they wait to see how financial reforms play out. However, it might not be as worrisome for the UHNWIs as they fear. Although the Democrats have won the White House, they fell short of regaining the Senate and this may prove positive for the markets, as a divided government reduces the risk of extreme policy changes, such as stricter regulation and higher taxes from the Democrats. Only time will tell what policy reforms the new Democratic government will be able to push through, but I predict that the UHNWIs do not need to worry at this stage. The Republican lead senate will do everything withing their power to protect the financial breaks afforded to the most wealthy. Predicted effect of a new Democratic government on the Superyacht Industry...I think we could well see a hesitation in new build contracts and yacht sales signed by American clients in the short term, pending the strength of Biden´s government to bring in new tax policies. If we were not in the middle of a global pandemic I would then predict that this hesitation would translate into a stronger yacht charter demand, but that of course will be dependent on what country and travel restrictions are in place this winter and next summer. As a charter broker the best advice I can give is to get away from it all, and there is no better place than aboard a yacht cruising beautiful waters, surrounded by your family and friends, safe from all the concerns of the outside world. No one says it better than the imitable Mark Twain “Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbour. Catch the trade winds in your sail. Explore. Dream. Discover”. The applicable islands include Grand Bahama, Abaco, Acklins, Andros, the Berry Islands, Bimini, Cat Island, Crooked Island, Eleuthera, Exuma, Inagua and Mayaguana. This is very significant for those wishing to charter yachts in the Carribean this winter. As these measures relate to inter-island travel, charters are allowed in compliance with the Emergency Orders, and commercial air travel resumed as normal starting last Wednesday, 9 September. Under the new amendments beaches and parks will be allowed to open from 5am to 12noon. This applies to all islands, including New Providence. Retailers will be allowed to offer in-store services, restaurants will be able to offer indoor dining services, provided they follow the physical distancing, mask wearing and sanitization protocols in the Orders. It is still mandatory to wear a mask in public and that police will enforce the $250 fine provided for in the Emergency Orders. To read the full article click on the link below.

Europe opens up for Yacht Charters
Author: Caroline Antlett
The charter industry looks increasingly positive, as the 15th June saw countries across Europe declare the lifting of many travel restrictions, and also detail future plans regarding tourism. It was also agreed at EU level, to gradually start opening to 3rd* countries** as of July 1st, subject to three conditions:
|
* 3rd countries are those that are outside the EU and associated Schengen countries (i.e. Norway, Switzerland, Iceland and Liechtenstein).
**The list of countries and their respective “starting order” (when can which country begin sending travellers to Europe), will be jointly decided by all EU Member States based on their respective epidemiological situation.
I have detailed the situation in the popular chartering destinations of Spain, Balearics, Croatia, France, Greece, Italy and Sardinia
Disclaimer – situations change daily and the current regulations as published at this time are subject to adjustments upon changing epidemiological data.

SPAIN & BALEARICS
Vistors from EU/Schengen countriesFrom June 21st, travellers from Schengen countries, Andorra and the UK may enter Spain for tourism without requiring quarantine on arrival. The exception is Portugal because the Portuguese PM decided his country will not reopen till July 1st. Visitors from 3rd countriesSpain expects to open borders with non-EU countries on the 1st July subject to the number of cases. |
Yacht travel
- Yachts are allowed to cruise but only up to a maximum of 12 miles offshore
- Cruising is allowed within provincial waters on mainland Spain, but not individual islands in the Balearics. No travelling between islands, at the moment, nor between the islands and mainland Spain.
- Clients/guests must necessarily be located in the same province or island where the yacht is berthed. Eg: a yacht berthed in Mallorca can only cruise with people that are located at that time in Mallorca.
- Yachts can cruise with a maximum of 10 guests provided all of them live under the same roof (quarantined together); or 50% of the total capacity if they don’t live in the same house.
May I enter this country without a medical certificate, such as a negative test? - YES

GREECE
Visitors from EU/Schengen countriesTravelers from EU and associated Schengen countries may enter and exit Greece but with limitations. Athens airport - Visitors originating from EU/EEA Member States that are in the EASA (European Union Aviation Safety Agency) affected area list, or from Italy, Spain, Netherlands or Sweden are subject to tests upon arrival until June 30th. You will be required to stay overnight and if the test is negative, the visitor is free to move to their final destination. If the test is positive, the visitor is quarantined under supervision for 14 days. Thessalonki airport - All flights are allowed except those from Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, the UK, Turkey,Albania and Northern Macedonia. All visitors are subject to compulsory testing upon arrival, regardless of country of origin, until June 30th. |
Visitors from 3rd countries
The situation seems complicated here, however officially Greece follows the European Commission’s proposal and extends the temporary restriction on non-essential travel from non-EU countries until June 30th.
U.S. citizens are permitted to enter Greece subject to COVID-19 testing and quarantine restrictions depending on where your travel originated. Origination is the first flight on your travel itinerary. For example, if you travel from the United States and connect through Germany, your U.S. flight is considered your origination. If your origination airport is on the EASA affected area list, you are subject to testing and quarantine per above.
Only essential travel from Albania and Northern Macedonia is permitted. The travel ban on flights from the United Kingdom and Turkey will be maintained (regardless of the EASA affected area list).

Voluntary 2 week quarantine for travellers coming from Spain by plane and travellers coming from the United Kingdom. Quarantine is mandatory when travelling to French overseas territories. |
Visitors from 3rd countries
Borders remain closed for the time being to non-EU nationals (exceptions mentioned above). 3rd-country travellers need to have a certificate confirming special circumstances (which can be found on the interior ministry’s website) and supporting documents to be allowed entry to France. The reason for the trip must correspond to one of those mentioned in the certificate.
